7 little-known government benefits that single moms can take advantage of

As a single mom, it can be tough to make ends meet. But did you know that there are a number of government benefits available to help you? Here are seven little-known benefits that you may be able to take advantage of:

1. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax credit available to low- and moderate-income workers. It can reduce the amount of taxes you owe, or give you a refund check if you don’t owe any taxes. To qualify, you must have earned income from work, and your child must meet certain requirements.

2. The Child and Dependent Care Credit helps parents pay for the care of their children while they work or look for work. You can claim up to $3,000 per year for one child under 13, or $6,000 per year for two or more children under 13.

3. The Child Tax Credit gives families a tax credit of up to $1,000 per child under 17 years old. To qualify, your income must be below certain limits.

4. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, provides assistance in buying food for low-income families and individuals. Eligibility is based on household size and income level.

5. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides cash assistance to low-income families with children who are deprived of parental support or care. Eligibility is based on family size and income level .

6 . Medicaid is a health insurance program offered through the state governments that covers people with low incomes and limited resources .

7 . The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 8 housing program provides rental assistance to low-income households .

It can be embarrassing to ask for help, but remember it is only temporary and the government is going to get their money back one way or another! So use it while you can, and then pay it forward in the future.
